Compare Mazda CX5 vs the Competition

Mazda CX-5 vs the Competition

When it comes to a compact SUV full of elegance, glory, and high-tech features, the CX-5 makes the Mazda brand proud. Exceptional performance, ample storage, passenger volume, and a plethora of advanced safety and convenience technology are some of the highlights that the Mazda CX-5 has to offer. Check out what sets the Mazda CX-5 from its rivals by reading through a comparison that puts the CX-5 toe to toe with its competitors.

Mazda CX-5 vs Toyota RAV4

Power & Performance

The Mazda CX-5 unsurprisingly surpasses the Toyota RAV4 specifications with a 2.5 I-4 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Although the Toyota RAV4 has the same engine type, it lacks the amount of torque output compared to the Mazda CX-5 and only has front-wheel drive. That being said, the Mazda CX-5 can accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 6.1 seconds, thanks to its horsepower of 250. Whereas the Toyota RAV4's horsepower of 203 sadly takes a whole 9.1 seconds to reach the same feat.

Design & Technology

Although Toyota RAV4 does offer more cargo volume than the Mazda CX-5, the Mazda CX-5 grants much more passenger volume than the Toyota RAV4 does. This boils down to your primary need for an SUV - whether you have family or friends who tend to commute with you often or if you mostly ride solo but carry many extras. For most SUV owners, the main purpose of purchase is to haul their loved ones.

Mazda CX-5 vs Honda CR-V

Power & Performance

The Honda CR-V significantly lacks here with its 1.5 I-4 engine - only displacing 179-pound feet of torque compared to the Mazda CX-5's 186. You also won't get all-wheel drive with the Honda CR-V, nor will you get nearly enough towing capacity. The Mazda CX-5 can tow up to two thousand pounds, while the Honda CR-V can only tow up to 1,500 pounds. Expect to accelerate slower than the Mazda CX-5, with a zero to 60 time of 7.8 seconds.

Design & Technology

Although the Honda CR-V is slightly larger in dimensions, the CR-V lacks quality features that aren't even available on higher trims. You won't get standard keyless ignition with the Honda CR-V, and advanced technology like parking assistance and ventilated/cooling seats are unavailable. Both SUVs seat five. However, the elegance of the Mazda CX-5 outshines the Honda CR-V with its interior and exterior design in every way possible - all for a lower price than the Honda CR-V

Mazda CX-5 vs Kia Sportage

Power & Performance

You can get the Kia Sportage for a slightly lower price. However, pinching pennies will result In a sacrifice of performance and power. The Kia Sportage only boasts 181 horsepower and 175-pound feet of torque and does not offer all-wheel drive on its standard trim. Though the Kia has the same tire size and transmission as the Mazda CX-5, the engine is smaller, and its fuel economy in the city is lesser than the Mazda CX-5. Expect to get from zero to 60 in 8.3 seconds with the Kia Sportage and only be able to tow a maximum of 1,653 pounds.

Design & Technology

Unsurprisingly, the Kia Sportage hosts less cargo room and less legroom for its passengers. Making it insufficient compared to the Mazda CX-5. Though you'll get much more interior and exterior color options with the Kia Sportage, it doesn't make up for the fact that keyless ignition and adaptive cruise control aren't standard on the base trim. As mentioned before, the Kia Sportage is slightly lower in price starting, but the cost to own and depreciation amount is significantly larger than the Mazda CX-5, making it not so cost-efficient in the long run.

Mazda CX-5 vs Volkswagen Tiguan

Power & Performance

Expect to pay much more starting with the Volkswagen Tiguan. Though you'll get your money's worth in terms of torque, you won't get as much horsepower as the Mazda CX-5, nor will you get a bigger engine. Its fuel economy also suffers compared to the Mazda CX-5, costing you more than you're already paying. You also won't get a better drivetrain warranty with the Volkswagen Tiguan, which leads us to believe that the 'impressive torque' may not be utilized or as efficient as it puts out to be.

Design & Technology

Both seating five, the Volkswagen Tiguan - Like the Toyota RAV4 - focuses more on cargo volume than passenger space. Expect less legroom and headroom in the Tiguan, as well as shoulder room. If you value interior and exterior color options more than space, you may want to pay extra for the Volkswagen Tiguan. However, we highly doubt that aesthetics will surpass the need for passenger volume.
